Janet Jackson’s 2009 VMA performance was all about her late brother, Michael Jackson. In a nearly 6-minute Michael Jackson tribute, the most famous remaining Jackson and a troupe of other dancers did their best to imitate the King of Pop’s moves as footage from some of his most memorable music videos played on a gigantic screen behind them.

The Michael Jackson tribute began with Madonna honoring the King of Pop in a speech about her relationship with him.

Madonna ended her speech saying, “Yes, Michael Jackson was a human being but he was a king. Long live the king!” eliciting a standing ovation from the audience.

Then live dancers took to the stage, performing in sync with Jackson’s greatest hits videos playing on a giant video screen in the background.

The montage, played as an opening tribute, included Michael Jackson songs and videos. These including Thriller, Bad, Smooth Criminal and finally, Scream. Janet Jackson paid homage to Michael by recreating her part from the Scream duet.
